While reading Jimmy Corrigan, I realized the diagrams were accurate and executable, but didn't feel that it was actually inviting me to make them. I felt like they were put in front of you a little out of reach. Like you, I didn't want to cut up the book, and i think that is intentional on his part, it takes away from the experience of re-reading it if the diagrams have ben cut out and made. The "toys" distance themselves from the reader by being unmade, and they distance themselves kind of like how the characters distance themselves, out of reach.
I don't know. I just felt that the fact that they COULD be made didn't necessarily mean that they were supposed to be made.
