This was the most enjoyable movie I saw in 2005. Your review is right on.

I did enjoy this new screen adaptation, but remains partialed towards the Olivier/Garson "pitch perfect" comic version in grand old Hollywood style.

I think the casting/acting is commendable in the Joe Wright version. I remember the pictorial compositions with a softer focus than I'd expected. The lighting also deliberately adds a softening distortion to the more "romantic" long shots. Further, I find amusing the elaborate editing made during the dance sequence that chopped up conversations.

More realism & serious drama here compared to the Olivier/Garson version.

Finally I've watched this movie and dearly loved it! Your review is nearly perfect, as was the movie itself. I loved all the detail that could be glimpsed in the party scenes; it was as tho a party was actually going on and not just being acted out. I loved Elizabeth and Jane and Lydia too. (By the way, never underestimate the power of a pretty boy poseur over those who cannot see their own deep feelings!) (Sadly, I speak from experience.)
